Food is any substance, usually composed of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and water, that can be eaten or drunk by an animal or human for nutrition or pleasure. Items considered food may be sourced from plants, animals or other categories such as fungus or fermented products like alcohol. Although many human cultures sought food items through hunting and gathering, today most cultures use farming, ranching, and fishing, with hunting, foraging and other methods of a local nature included but playing a minor role.

Most traditions have a recognizable cuisine, a specific set of cooking traditions, preferences, and practices, the study of which is known as gastronomy. Many cultures have diversified their foods by means of preparation, cooking methods and manufacturing. This also includes a complex food trade which helps the cultures to economically survive by-way-of food, not just by consumption.

Many cultures study the dietary analysis of food habits. While humans are omnivores, religion and social constructs such as morality often affect which foods they will consume. Food safety is also a concern with foodborne illness claiming many lives each year. In many languages, food is often used metaphorically or figuratively, as in "food for thought".

What other foods can help a dog with a bladder stone?
Q. My 3 year old chihuahua has a bladder stone and was given a Urinary SO diet dry dog food. He is very picky and won't eat the food even if its wet. I've been making him his own dog food since the big recall, and whatever I do he wont eat it (mixing it with other foods). Is there anything I can make that can help with his bladder stone?

A. You need to know what type of stone before a diet can be determined... the treatment for one type of stone is nearly opposite the treatment for another. Please consider joining Yahoo's K9KidneyDiet email group. There are a lot of people on it with tons of experience dealing with both bladder and kidney stones. I rescued a dog with calcium oxylate bladder stones.. the group's FuzzerFood Diet has worked wonders for him and he's now doing well in his new (3 years now!) home. Good luck,

What foods are low in calories and help keep you feeling full longer?
Q. I really need to lose weight! I want to look like I did before my 2 kids. I know I would be SOOO much happier with myself, but I love food and I have a big appetite. I've been told that celery has less calories in it than it takes to burn it off. But I can't just eat celery. What other foods that are low in calories can I eat or make a meal from that will keep me feeling fuller longer?

What foods are best cooked in good quality stainless steel cookware? I'm planning to...?
Q. I am planning to purchase Calphalon Contemporary cookware, however I'm having a difficult time deciding between the stainless steel or the nonstick. The exterior on the stainless steel is absolutely beautiful, however I'm concerned with my food sticking to the pans. Instead of buying a set of one or the other, I'm thinking I should buy each piece individually. So I'd like to know, what foods are best cooked in stainless steel and why?

A. I cook just about everything in good stainless steel pans. I love mine. Stainless heats up pretty fast and holds the heat. You'll find yourself cooking at slightly lower temperatures. I want pans that I can bang around in the kitchen. I don't want to work to hard at taking care of them. I don't want glass lids that I can't replace if I drop one. There's nothing wrong with buying a starter set, but I prefer to buy pans as I need them. Most of my pans don't match. That is fine with me. They are my tools, I didn't by them to decorate the kitchen. I have: 4 stainless saucepans. 1 stainless skillet. 3 cast iron skillets. 1 heavy rolled steel wok, 1 stainless stock pot. I use the cast iron for most frying, Stainless steel for… [cont.]
