Why do I get food poisoning from fast food places?
Q. I eat a lot at fast food places and I've noticed that I get frequent food poisonings lately. In about 50% cases of eating there I get a diarreah the next day. In about 5% I throw up, have temperature and cannot eat anything for a few days - stomach flue? And it is the same for fast food and upscale restaurants. The only places I dont get a food poisoning is in my company's cafeteria (that has mostly fast food) and the best restaurants in Seattle, where I live?

A. Be careful where you eat. Some places do not enforce sanitary practices as much as other places. If one of the employees doesn't wash their hands after going to the bathroom, touching money, or pretty much touching anything other than food, the food you eat can become contaminated. Or, if one of the employees is sick already, and touches your food, it can make you sick, too. I work in the food service industry and I am very strict with my employees to make sure they wash their hands often. However, lazy managers who don't care or employees who don't care will cause problems. Other than that, you may be eating too many fatty, greasy foods, and your body is sending you a message. Fast food is very unhealthy and you should only eat it once… [cont.]

Does storing food in pots and pans in the refrigerator poison the food?
Q. My mom used to always tell me to put left overs in a tupperware and place in the fridge. She said the if you put the pot or pan in the fridge to store the left overs, it would poison the food. My boyfriend does this all the time and I've always refused to eat the food. Well, now I'm sick and he made some chicken soup. He put the soup in the fridge, in the pot and gave me some for work today. I'm scared to eat it because of what Mom used to always say but I can't seem to find anything on the net about it. Has anyone heard of this? Is it true that refrigerated food in pots poisons you? My mom used to always tell me to put left overs in a tupperware and place in the fridge. A. No that does not make you sick. I do that all the time. Its best to not store in the pan longer than 24 hours but if he did the soup last night you aren't sick from the way it was stored. I think the warning came about because pans were made of coarse metals and iron pots and that can leech into food. Most pots now are stainless steel.

What kind of pet food is healthier to feed your cat, dry food or canned food?
Q. We have been feeding our new cat canned food because that is what the shelter said she preffered. However, we just got back from the vet and learned she has gingivitis. I have also heard that most canned food is essentially the same thing as giving your pets junk food or candy. What's the answer?
Asked by Troy - Fri Aug 31 00:20:52 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Actually feeding both is best. The vet I worked at fed a little canned food and free fed dry through out the day... Canned food is not like candy. It is high in meat content and is good for them, but they need the dry to clean their teeth. Hope that helps!

What are the benefits of moist food for cats and dogs?
Q. I've always just fed my animals dry cat/dog food on a regular basis. Occasionally, I give them a treat of moist food, or soft food. I just purchased some soft and hard mixed dog food and my dog loves it. I guess I'm not sure why people feed their animals moist food as well as hard, or just moist food. I heard that moist food is bad for their teeth. What is your thoughts?
Asked by Jay S - Sat Jan 20 07:34:15 2007 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. OH NO! Just kidding, well kinda, but anyway don't do it! I have been trying to get my two off of wet food for several weeks now. I have a pomerpoo who loves it, and knows it by name, (only the expecsive stuff too) and won't touch dry unless you hand feed it to him. Yes, he is spoiled rotten, but he's mine. My other is a pup, and she almost got hooked on the wet, but I think I've got it stopped now. My vet said it was bad for their teeth, causes plaque build up and initiates decay at a faster rate, which makes sence to me since I work in dental. So I've been giving just dry, and adding warm water, (a little less water everyday) to moisten it and they have started eating only it. I still have some back up wet for special occassions. … [cont.]

How do food addictions and allergies work?
Q. I read that food allergies can become addictions because our bodies craves the food we are allergic to (some, not all obviously) and can lead to the addiction of that food. This is counter intuitive on so many levels lol So maybe I understood incorrectly. Can someone explain the link between food allergy and addiction? Is this pseudoscience or real? How does it work? Serious answers only.
Asked by professionalkiwi - Sat Jun 6 13:27:46 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm allergic to eggs, nuts, peanuts, and tree nuts and I've never heard of this. I'd say it isn't true because once you eat a food your allergic to it makes you feel so uncomfortable and bad that you'd never want to feel that way again. For example once I ate once of those really big Laffy Taffy and who knew those have eggs in them and the little ones don't. Anyway my throat swelled up and it was difficult to breathe. I don't think I'd become addicted to something that makes me feel that awful.

How much fresh food should I supplement a dog's kibble with, and how often should I feed him canned food?
Q. I just got a 2 month old black lab. I tried buying some kibble without so many of the byproducts, preservatives and stuff, but even then I still have my doubts about it. I want to supplement the commercial food with fresh foods, but I don't know how much to give him, nor do I know how much kibble. And how often should I feed him canned food?
Asked by T.B. - Wed Dec 31 00:50:57 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your dog can be entirely fed on Raw. If you wish to feed a mix of Raw and kibble, and there are some good reasons to do that, then keep the two separate, for instance, feed kibble for the morning meal and Raw for the evening. Research Raw feeding on line, it'll only take a couple hours of reading to understand it, there are several models, and I'd not claim that one is superior to the other. I don't use vegetables myself, just Green Tripe and a SeaMeal supplement, but those who do use vegetables are equally successful. Tripe is a highly recommended starter food to get a puppy on raw, and then I personally start them on whole ground chicken. I wouldn't bother with canned food at all.

Many of the less-exotic foods have already been claimed by other clubs (soda, donuts, burritos, burgers, caramel apples, apple cider, garlic/foccacia bread, fried chicken, fish balls, smoothies, pizza, sushi, tapioca). We are also not allowed to sell food cooked by ourselves. What other food items are likely to sell well? By the way, I live in northern California, so the weather is always pretty mild. A. Hi there ...cats who eat dry cat foods tend to suffer from recurring episodes of feline lower urinary tract disorders (FLUTD) and this seems to be a common denominator with cats diagnosed with various types of FLUTD's. The idea is to acidify the urine (like cranberry juice does for humans) because cats with FLUTD disorders have urine pH that is more alkaline so your goal is to reverse this and canned foods have been known to achieve the results. Additionally, it's important to schedule feed a cat so you can monitor servings taken in during the day which seems to keep the urine from becoming more alkaline. Furthermore, for cats who suffer from FLUTD the hydration in the canned products helps metabolize food better and are also… [cont.]

A. Please find someone to come in daily or at the least every other day to feed your cat and give it fresh water, clean the litterbox and play with it. that is way way way way too long for a cat to be left alone for. 48 hrs is too long. if you can't find someone to come into your home to take care of your cat you should find somewhere to board your cat, maybe the vet's office will do it or know of a good place.

A. I have found the Grant's ant stakes to be effective in getting ants out of my home. There is no way a cat can get into them and be poisoned. If you are leaving dry food out for your cat it is really not a good idea. It is much healthier for the cat to have two "meals" a day even if your return in the evening is somewhat erratic. The cat will not starve waiting for your return. When dry food is out all the time the cat's digestive system is always in an "on" mode. This means that blood and digestive juices are constantly in the cat's stomach and the healthy fresh blood is not available for the maintenance of other important organs in the body.

What tax category are food purchases for food sales rep?
Q. My husband is a food sales rep employee in which he also gives consultations/suggestions for restaurants. As a result, he eats at many of his customers' restaurants to try their food or at potential customers' restaurants. This should be tax deductible because it's for his job in which he is trying their food and/or trying to promote business. However, I don't think this would fall into the meal category which is only 50% deductible. Anyone know what category this would fall into?

A. If he's eating at their restaurants with an eye towards promoting their restaurant, THEY should be paying for the meals. Meals taken in the vicinity of your tax home are not deductible. A food critic might have an argument but your hubby does not.

We would like to feed her twice a day, but we don't know how much to feed her and she is already starting to get a little chubby. She also tries to eat the dog food when she has none. A. The recommended serving is the total amount to feed a cat per day. Since she is still a baby, break that 1/3 cup into a couple of smaller meals a day. Don't give her 1/3 cup each serving. You'll wind up with a chunky cat.
