Domestication (from Latin domesticus) or taming is the process whereby a population of animals or plants, through a process of selection, becomes accustomed to human provision and control. A defining characteristic of domestication is artificial selection by humans. Some species such as the Asian Elephant, numerous members of which have for many centuries been used as working animals, are not domesticated because they have not normally been bred under human control, even though they have been commonly tamed. Humans have brought these populations under their care for a wide range of reasons: to produce food or valuable commodities (such as wool, cotton, or silk), for help with various types of work (such as transportation or protection), for protection of themselves and livestock and for scientific research, such as finding cures for certain diseases or simply to enjoy as companions or ornaments.

Plants domesticated primarily for aesthetic enjoyment in and around the home are usually called house plants or ornamentals, while those domesticated for large-scale food production are generally called crops. A distinction can be made between those domesticated plants that have been deliberately altered or selected for special desirable characteristics (see cultigen) and those domesticated plants that are essentially no different from their wild counterparts (assuming domestication does not necessarily imply physical modification). Likewise, animals domesticated for home companionship are usually called pets while those domesticated for food or work are called livestock or farm animals.

Does anyone know what kind of wild cats usually breed with domesticated ones?
Q. We have a kitten and we're pretty sure her father was a wild cat. She has more of a tiger shaped face and her demeanor (laying, sitting, playing, etc.) is more like what you see on the discovery channel than we usually see in our domesticated cats. If someone can give me a list with pictures of what they usually look like, it would be great. Someone told us that she might be something that starts with an "S" but I can't remember the name.

A. Often, when people say 'wild cat', what they mean is 'feral cat'. That is, a stray cat - the same species as pet cats, but living wild. If your cat's father was a feral cat, she is still pure domestic cat and will make a perfectly fine pet (two of my cats were born feral, and taken into a shelter as kittens - they are entirely tame). However, domestic cats can be bred with some other small cat species. The best-known is the leopard cat, which is bred with a domestic cat to produce a hybrid known as a Bengal cat. Breeding a serval with a domestic cat produces a hybrid called a savannah cat. Here are some images: Bengal cat: Savannah cat:

Why is a continent oriented on the East/West axis more successful in diffusing domesticated crops and anima?
Q. Explain and give examples of why a continent oriented on an east/west as as opposed to a north/ south axis was far more successful in diffusing domesticated crops and animals, as well as inventions and cultural practices.

A. Basically, because continents with a east/west orientation have smaller climatic variability. Regions at similar latitudes have roughly similar climates. Therefore, people can go more easily back and forth without experiencing a total new environment. Typical examples with east/west orientation are Europe and Asia. The opposite would be the Americas and Africa.

Q. can someone tell me where I can locate and purchase a domesticated meerkat in the state of texas? that website makes no sense. a meerkat is totally different from a bear or boa. and it says that animals walk miles and miles in one day. but yet they keep them in habitats in zoos.

A. I hate to break this to you, but meer cat's are illegal when kept in activity because of there endangerment in the wild. Also, I know they look really cute and everything, and there not very big, but meercats are strong animals that through tantrams like a child, but there harder to controll. I know of lot's of meer cat gone bad stories. There's one woman who had a meer cat she kept in the house. It was a fine pet but one day she left it alone out of it's cage and she left the house. When she came back home that evening, the entire wall of sheetrock was tore down because the meercat had got bored...
