DOG FOOD?????????????????
Q. What brand of dog food should I feed my brittany spaniel??? Thanks.
Asked by kateinkansas - Wed Apr 8 15:08:33 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is a great question and you should do your research very carefully! Everyone is going to have their opinion but that does not mean it is the right food for your dog. I just lost my seven year old German Shephard to cancer and that is when I went searching for the cause. I came across a website on the internet that shocked me into disbelief that I probably had poisoned my dog to death and didn't even know it. Most dog foods are loaded with hidden poisons and other obsenities I still have a hard time grasping. I am going to give you the website address so you can read this report and learn what is really in commercial dog foods and you can make an educated decision like I did on which dog food to buy! I wish you all the best!

How do you make homemade dog food?
Q. I am pretty satisfied with commercial dog food and I have no problem sticking with it, but I would just like to know how to make nutritional homemade dog food. My dogs are a golden retriever, beagle, and dachshund if that information is needed. I would like advice also, like what supplements to put in the food, and the right portions, and a professional website would be the best. I don't really want just homemade dog food that isn't any better than commercial dog food. Please help out. Thanks.

A. Do not feed your dog bones, especially cooked bones. Fragments can become lodged in the digestive tract. Canines in the wild who eat bones have the benefit of consuming hair and hide too, which have been found to pad the bone fragments and aid in their passing. Other foods to avoid that are dangerous for dogs are chocolate, avocados, mushrooms, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic. Try one of these easy dog food recipes and watch your pup smile.

What dog food should I avoid feeding my dogs because of the food contamination?
Q. My dogs eat the Ol' Roy dry dog food from those big bags, and it seems fine. But when this bag is all used up, is it okay to buy the same thing? I just want to know what brands are contaminated and to avoid getting. Thanks.

A. Don't feed them anything with wheat gluten in it. Though it was mainly canned food that was recalled, they are now recalling some dry brands and treats as well. Ol' Roy was on the list, so I would suggest buying something else just to be safe..

Q. I would like to know in a multi-dog household if there were more issues with food aggression or dog to dog aggression around the food bowls? So if they were on table scraps for their meals what feeding behaviors did you see?

A. Before commerical dog food people when to the butcher for scraps, ie., raw, meaty bones, meat scraps, etc. and table scraps. I raw feed my dogs, no table scraps and see little aggression with any food.

My dog loves to eat people food. If I would let him he would only eat people food instead of dog food?
Q. Why don't they put a taste into dog food that dogs will really look forward to eating. I get the impression that my dog eats his dog food only because he's hungry not because he like the taste of it. With today's technology they should be able to make dog food have a taste dogs will find so delicious. That dogs will prefer their food to people food @ *Sombra* Its easier said than done. It hard to look at my dog staring at my food with a hungry yearning look on his face.

A. There actually is a kind of dog food that is healthy for your dog. Have you ever tried giving your dog Beneful? If you haven't you should try giving it to him. I have 2 dogs and they love it. They scarf their food down like within a minute. I give my older dog 3 scoops of dog food and my younger dog 1 1/2 scoops of dog food because my older dog scarfs her food down faster than my younger dog.

What is the best dog food that is easily found in stores?
Q. We are having a hard time finding a top-quality dog food in the stores. I'd hate to have to mail-order our dog food with such high prices on fuel right now. Does anyone have any recommendations on a pet store chain that actually carries good quality dog food? Petco just doesn't have anything good. Iams, Purina, Science Diet, all of those are full of grains, which are bad for the dogs. Help!

A. I have seen innova in common places like petland. I dont typically shop at pet stores that are apart of big chains, I prefer to support localized places, such as a feed store. If you live near a feed store, they may have a high quality kibble. I know many places are willing to sell the stuff if you ask, but your best bet for high quality nutrition, if you feed kibble, is to find a better store. My top three dog foods are orijen, evo, and innova, but I consider the ultimate diet to be raw. If you are looking for the best diet to feed your dog, I would definitely look into it, it not only allows you to know exactly what your dog is eating, but you can save money, if you spend wisely. I chose to feed raw after researching for a good… [cont.]

A. A median priced food that was not on the recall lists with the melamine etc. is Nature's Recipe which does not have corn, wheat, soy or artificial dyes. Also doesn't have BHA or BHT and is readily available in large Pet Stores like PetSmart or PetCo. Most other brands sold there have been in multiple recalls for both dry and wet. Beneful wasn't recalled, but it has lots of junk in it, allergy causing product. Avoid foods that list wheat, corn or soy in their ingredients. When you change food, do it gradually over a week and a half or so. Start feeding the old food (3/4) with 1/4 new food for a few days and if tolerated well, then give 1/2 old and 1/2 new- same progression then 3/4 new and 1/4 old then all new. You can add a few… [cont.]

Q. I have heard that you should feed your dog dry food, because it keeps their teeth strong (not sure if this is true). A. There are some great brands out there like Nutro Natural Choice, Natural Balance, Castor and Pollux... ect... Many will suit your dog just fine, but let's look at how to buy dog food. 1.) Check the ingredients which are listed by weight. You want ingredients like chicken, duck, and salmon listed as the first few ingredients. Ingredients you don't want too much of are kinda obvious like meat byproduct, rice, chicken meal. 2.) Check the guaranteed analysis. Puppies need around 25% protein and 16% fat, adults need around 21% protein and 14% fat, senior dogs need even less. Best thing to do is compare the puppy, adult and senior foods all from the same brand and then grab a lesser brand to compare as well. 3.) You might also want to look… [cont.]

What is a good dog food for a dog w/ a sensitive stomach?
Q. I have a 7 month old rottweiler puppy who has a very sensitive stomach. She gets diarrhea from any new food, or any kind of treat./ This has been confirmed by the Vet. She isn't sick w/ anything like parvo. SHe is currently on California Naturals. Is that a good dog food for a sensitive stomach? Or should I gradually switch her to a better dog food, and if so what is better thatn that?
Asked by jacquelineleeca - Sat Oct 28 01:23:12 2006 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. "Purina ONE Sensitive Systems" is what I use for my Old English Sheepdog (they have puppy and adult versions of this product). It cost more that the regular dog food but is much much better for the dog. The main ingredient in it is salmon. I've also been told by my vet that any oatmeal based dog food is the best. But the problem is that I can't find one anywhere. Don't use any of the regular type dog food. If you look on the nutrition label, the main ingredient is corn and that's bad for the dog. Good luck!

A. All those food that you named are not high quality foods that have meat by-products in them. I would go with a purer higher quality food such as Canidae or Innova. I asked the same question when i got my cat~ But whatever food you decide, make sure you check the ingredients..get foods with no by-products, no corn or wheat gluten meal. Hope this helped~

Whats the difference between dog treats and regular dog food?
Q. More specifically, whats in dog treats thats so different from regular dog food, and makes dogs freak over their treats? Why isnt this just added to regular dog food to make it more appealing to dogs, not that it really matters?
Asked by Volunteer1988 - Sat Jul 25 19:57:55 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Nothing is different in most, they are cheaply made, most are very high in fat content and have very high 'flavourings' in them...not really good food for dogs, but because they are different and are given as a treat they become high value to the dog...if you fed a bowl of treats a day, they would lose that high value and they certainly wouldn't give the nutrients required, make your dog fat and un healthy

A. I feed Canidae. It is made from all human grade ingredients, so there is less chance of it being contaminated. All ingredients are produced in USA. Canidae is for all life stages, so you don't need to change when they are adults. All of my dogs thrive on Canidae. there are several other good ones. I certainly wouldn't recommend Iams or Science Diet. Both have fillers that dogs don't digest, so you are wasting money that should be spent on nutrition, not extra poop and advertising

What is the best dog food for a dog with kidney disease?
Q. Well, my newly adopted dog was just diagnosed with kidney disease. They said it's not bad yet, but that I should feed her some special kidney disease food. I take her to the vet in Petsmart (Banfield), so she recommended Hills K/D (the only kind they sell there). Anyway, I was wondering what anyone thinks is the best dog food for kidney disease "treatment". Thanks for any suggestions!! :) ps: it's chronic kidney disease, in case it matters. And she's only 3 years old. Thanks again!
Asked by Britches - Thu Mar 25 14:27:59 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The veterinarian I work for always recommends Hill's K/D for kidney problems. Don't get it confused with C/D. It helps bladder problems. Oh, and don't feed her table scraps. Human food can damage the kidneys and liver.

A. When my whippet has soft stools I cut back his food to let him recover from what ever bug he has and only feed him small amounts of either boiled rice with natural yogurt, or some scrambled eggs cooked in very little oil and if I have some chicken in the fridge I boil that and shred it and serve that with some boiled rice/pasta. But the trick is not to feed a dog with diarrhea too much in fact the vet would suggest you starve him during the day. Good luck!

A. yes! Here is a website that will give you recipes for dog food: I personally love to make my dog treats! They are great for training, and they break easily into pieces for smaller dogs! Dog treat: Ground up dog food. half a cup Crumble in vegetables like carrots and celery. one fourth cup add a small amount of flour add milk or water, whatever you like best also add a small amount of peanut butter for color and taste mix and combine until you have a gooey substance, but on the wetter side. Roll out and use small cookie cutters to cut out the dog treats. Put them in the oven at 350 degrees and bake for awhile, until they look about done. Let them sit, because they will harden later. What kind of dog food can have more fiber in for a cocker spaniel ?
Q. I heard that dog food with corn in is bad for dogs. And they recommeded all bran cereal, but she won't eat. And canned pumpkin, she will eat. And our dog always has to have her glands cleaned out, or expressed. She is always scooting and have to go to vet.
Asked by Valerie B - Wed Apr 25 14:21:51 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If your issue is with your dog's anal sacs, then changing diet is not going to do anything to help the situation. Your best bet is to actually have them surgically removed and this will eliminate the cause of all the scooting and the trips to the vet to have them expressed. As for the fiber, just go to the store and check all the labels. Dog food labels have fiber content on them.
