Wine is an alcoholic beverage, typically made of fermented grape juice. The natural chemical balance of grapes is such that they can ferment without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes or other nutrients. Wine is produced by fermenting crushed grapes using various types of yeast. Yeast consumes the sugars found in the grapes and converts them into alcohol. Different varieties of grapes and strains of yeasts are used depending on the type of wine being produced. Although other fruits such as apples and berries can also be fermented, the resultant wines are normally named after the fruit from which they are produced (for example, apple wine or elderberry wine) and are generically known as fruit wine or country wine (not to be confused with the French term vin de pays). Others, such as barley wine and rice wine (i.e., sake), are made from starch-based materials and resemble beer and spirit more than wine, while ginger wine is fortified with brandy. In these cases, the use of the term "wine" is a reference to the higher alcohol content, rather than production process. The commercial use of the English word "wine" (and its equivalent in other languages) is protected by law in many jurisdictions. Wine has a rich history dating back to around 6000 BC and is thought to have originated in areas now within the borders of Georgia and Iran. Wine first appeared in Europe at about 4500 BC in the Balkans, and was very common in ancient Greece, Thrace and Rome. Wine has also played an important role in religion throughout history. The Greek god Dionysus and the Roman equivalent Bacchus represented wine, and the drink is also used in Catholic Eucharist ceremonies and the Jewish Kiddush. The word "wine" comes from the Proto-Germanic "*winam," an early borrowing from the Latin vinum, "wine" or "(grape) vine," itself derived from the Proto-Indo-European stem *win-o- (cf. Hittite: wiyana, Lycian: Oino, Ancient Greek οῖνος - oînos, Aeolic Greek ϝοίνος - woinos). The earliest attested terms referring to wine are the Mycenaean Greek me-tu-wo ne-wo meaning "the month of new wine" or "festival of the new wine" and wo-no-wa-ti-si meaning "wine garden", written in Linear B inscriptions. Q. I'm thinking about getting a wine rack for my basement or a wine cooler. However, is it bad to chill wine for long periods of time if you don't plan on opening it anytime soon? Or does it not matter either way? Asked by xparadiseryan - Mon Jan 21 05:28:50 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. A wine cooler simply keeps the wine at a constant temperature and humidity - I keep the one in my kitchen at around 17 degrees. Wine needs to be kept somewhere humid to prevent the corks drying out and tainting the wine. With white wines it doesn't matter so much if you chill them for a while, but they won't develop their aged flavours. If you do chill the wine, don't then take it out of cold storage until you drink it, as some wines will form a white haze - which doesn't really affect the flavour, but doesn't look pleasant. Answered by bottersnike_lisa - Mon Jan 21 05:50:30 2008 How do I arrange wine bottles in the wine chiller?
Q. My dad recently got a wine chiller for the house. Manual wasn't any good except for technical and operation answers. We've never owned a wine chiller so is there a specific arrangement for the red, white, sparkling and etc? Like red is on the top, white in the middle and sparkling at the bottom or something. Thanks. Asked by Danny Foo - Mon Jun 2 02:24:18 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. OK, in the technical section it should tell you where the coldest spot in the fridge is. It's probably on top where the condenser is, like a kitchen fridge. (Ever notice how stuff on the top shelf is colder and almost freezes?) So if that's the case, I'd put the sparkling wine on top, then the white, then the red on the bottom. Answered by chefgrille - Mon Jun 2 02:37:53 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Wine"
