What makes you want to try a new restaurant?
Q. What is the most important factor that influences you to try a new restaurant, written restaurant reviews, paid advertising by the restaurant, word of mouth from friends & family, online travel or dining guides like trip adviser or is it simply the restaurants' proximity to your home or work or something else?
Asked by Paul J - Wed Dec 17 21:49:48 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First I look at the menu to see if what they offer sounds appealing to me. If their dishes are so esoterically named I can't figure out what they are, forget it. I also check to see what the prices are like and whether I think the food will be worth it. I then check restaurant reviews (not the paid critics but the local regular folks like me) to see what they have to say. I keep in mind the type of food being offered and the type of people reviewing (a whole lot of people can't tell good sushi from ok sushi, for instance, and they think that just because they get a lot of sushi or those horrible multi-fish sushi rolls it automatically makes it good--wrong!). If it's a neighborhood place, I try to drop in during the day (if they are… [cont.]

table cloth for bar square dining table?
Q. I am having the hardest time looking for a table cloth to cover my square bar dining table. Everything that I find is for oblong and round tables. I also want to buy chair covers, but I dont know if the standard covers will cover the bar dining chairs since they are taller. Does anyone own one of these tables and found covers? Please guide me where to shop.
Asked by Nina - Thu Jan 11 00:14:31 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Have you considered a runner instead of a tablecloth? If you really want to fully cover the surface of the table, maybe your best bet is to make your own or enlist a friend with a sewing maching to make it for you. You should be able to purchase the needed yardage at a fabric store in the colour and fabric of your choice, custom fit it to your table and then sew a simple hem on the edges. Chair covers for bar chairs could also be custom made in the same or complementary fabric.

What is the name of the chicago website that list all the black clubs and dining? The word "soul" is the title?
Q. The site list all things black in the city of chicago including clubs and restaurants and I actually found it linked on a chicago guide website. I think the name of it is close to "soul chicago" or soul of chicago". please help!!! IT was the most organized and comrehensive black guide I have found for chicago!!!
Asked by ms_lady21 - Sun Nov 23 02:33:24 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. An easier way to search for "black" clubs is to search by neighborhoods rather than "black" clubs. For instance, at the risk of stereotyping, if you check for South Side clubs and restaurants you can come across a pretty good listing, places like the Negro League Cafe, And no offense to the previous answerer, but the links to those sites listing "R&B bars" is pretty inaccuracte. For instance, if you go to Betty's Blue Star Lounge (one of the sites listed) looking for a "black club" you will be GREATLY disappointed. I've listed a few South Side links below. Some are a little more "refined" than others. You'll have to do your own research. I'm not familiar with the West side, but you might want to do a search for those too. Oh, and as… [cont.]

I'm traveling to Southern Africa---Malawi, South Africa, Zimbabwae, Lesotho, and Namibia--- and would like a travel guide that covers information on how to get between each country, hotel, dining, and national park regulations. I would prefer it be geared towards the budget traveler. I have used Lonely Planet in the past, and loved it, but i've heard the guide for Southern Africa is not very good. Any thoughts?

A. Lonely Planet is by far the best guide in my own personal opinion. It has tons of information that is easy to read and digest in a simple and interesting language. It also provides a lot of valuable local insights such as tipping etc which other guides do not provide.

What is the best way to finish a solid pine dinning table?
Q. My husband and I finally agreed on a new dining table and chair set from Ikea. The chairs are natural pine that already have a clear laquer on them but the table is completely unfinished. He wants to put it together and start using it the same day we buy it even though our current set isn't going to bite the dust tomorrow. I told him that I wanted to give the table a very light stain and then clear coat it to match the chairs or at least just put the clear coat on it before it gets used for the first time, and for that matter before it is put together. My husband is impatient and not exactly the best at assembling things like this, even though I am the one to hide the assembly guide before I go to put something together, though I do check… [cont.]

A. Do not use before sealed!!! If you get anything on it, it will be hell to get off. I would recommend that (even you want to leave it natural) you seal it first with MINWAX clear stain (primer). then finish with a polyurethane. *Note* Water based polyurethanes start to set up quickly. When brushing a large surface you could make a mess of things. Work quickly. Use a large brush. Don't brush back into where you have brushed already. DON"T try to put on a thick coat. Two or three THINNN coats (000 steel wool in between) will be much better. If you can handle the smell and a little extra time, use a solvent based polyurethane. They won't set up so quickly so you will be less likely to make a mess. Still, NEVER put on heavy. THIN… [cont.]

Is it possible to stain a wood table if it is already stained?
Q. I couldn't pass up this little pub set (it is adorable) because it was so cheap, like $250.00 for the table and four stools... but it is in a light maple color (i dont know the color im not a wood person), but it totally would clash with our dining room floor and walls (which are a deep brown)... We wanted to stain it a dark brown or sand it down and paint it black. Is this feasible? Should I go to a store like Home Depot and they would guide me in this type of situation? Thanks ! (im totally not a DIY kinda girl)

A. It has to be "stripped" first. Then you can stain it whatever color you like. Home Depot can help you with the materials

Do any women have any suggestions, in general, regarding restaurants for dinner out on dates?
Q. I initially thought to post this in "singles and dating"; however, Yahoo suggested this category instead, and since no one is really answering any questions over there right now, I will try Yahoo's suggestion, hoping that some women have some advice on this topic. The times when my date suggests the restaurant, only very rarely have I asked for a re-suggestion. The few times I have, it was because she had never been to that establishment and I have, and knew that their specific food or service was poor. No date of mine has wanted poor food or service LOL. This has happened maybe once a year or more, just to indicate to you how infrequent this is. I would never ask for a re-suggestion beyond that or something similar. When I suggest a… [cont.]

A. "Building" a door will not be cheap. Go to a Home Center and purchase a prehung door. This way all you need to do is remove the old door casing and install the new one. Stairs can be covered with the material of your choice including carpeting, tile or wood.

What is a good guide for a dialysis diet?
Q. A friend of mine is on dialysis. They have put her on a special diet, but alot of the paperwork contradicts itself. How much sodium, potassium, etc. should be allowed? What foods should be oof-limits and what foods can she eat w/o restrictions, if any. Are there any good recipes that still taste great? What about foods that are already made? How can she dine out and not hit over her limit? She's not diabetic so she doesn't have the same restrictions. We already know that she can only have 5 cups of fluids per day, but what else? Please be as specific as possible!
Asked by kphillips0910 - Sun Oct 8 18:13:18 2006 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. While there are some general similarities in diets for those who are on dialysis such as restrictions on fluid, electrolytes and increased protein, the specific diets are individualized. If you have questions or are finding contradictions you should take those issues up with the registered dietitian who has formulated the diet. If you continue to be unhappy I recommend you find another registered dietitian. You can ask at your dialysis center, your doctor or the National Kidney Foundation at the website below.
